What is the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a global non-governmental organization with a membership of 164 national standards bodies. ISO's mandate is to gather experts to develop International Standards to ensure quality. Some of the best known standards include:

  • ISO 9000 Quality Management-  a standard to help organizations document and continually improve their quality management practices
  • ISO 14001 Environmental Management – a standard to help organizations manage their environmental responsibilities
  • ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety – a standard to help organizations reduce occupational injuries and diseases
  • ISO 50001 Energy Management – a standard for helping organizations manage their energy performance

What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is a practical set of tools developed by the International Organization of Standards for companies that want a system to manage their environmental responsibilities. The objective of the standard is to enable organizations to establish an Environmental Management System that is fully integrated with their operational processes. The five key elements are:

  • Development of an Environmental Policy

  • Planning how the policy will be fully integrated with the business operations

  • Implementation and Operation the day to day of the policies

  • Checking the effectiveness of the policies and identifying opportunities for improvement

  • Management Review to ensure adherence to the policy at all levels in the organization

The principal of Continual Improvement is fundamental to the Environmental Management System. This includes improved communications and employee awareness, increasingly stringent environmental performance, and more effective emergency planning and response programs. In 2019,  ISO 14005 was added to assist smaller organizations with implementing ISO 14000 in a phased approach.

What is ISO 14005?

ISO 14005:2019 provides a systematic approach to environmental management for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The standard recognizes that SMEs usually lack a formal system and enables organizations to implement an Environmental Management System using a phased approach, so they can ultimately meet the requirements of ISO 14001.

What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 is global standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems,  published in March 2018 by the International Organization of Standards. The standard provides a framework for organizations to manage the risks to worker illnesses and injuries.  ISO 45001 builds on the old OHSAS 18001 standard, but there are also two fundamental differences. First, IS0 45001 is founded on a top-down commitment to safety, holding C-suite executives accountable for worker wellness. Second, the standard emphasizes a risk management approach, by requiring organizations to proactively identify sources or situations that have the potential to cause harm. The key elements include:

  • Development of an Occupational Health and Safety Policy

  • Planning how the policy will be fully integrated with the business operations

  • Implementation and Operation the day to day of the policies

  • Checking the effectiveness of the policies and identifying opportunities for improvement

  • Management Review to ensure adherence to the policy at all levels in the organization

The principal of Continual Improvement is fundamental to the Environmental Management System. This can take the form of improved communications and employee awareness, increasingly stringent health and safety performance, and more effective emergency planning and response programs.
