What is an Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS)?

We received a great response to our article on EHS definitions so we thought it would be useful to expand our list to include some Health and Safety Management System definitions.

What is an Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS)?

An Occupational Health and Safety Management System is a set of procedures and tools that company puts in place to effectively manage the occupational health and safety of their workers. The main goals of the system are

1. To prevent accidents.

2. To identify the root cause of accidents

3. To try and determine the events leading up to near-misses.

The OHSMS must ensure at a minimum that an organization complies with the applicable laws and regulations in each jurisdiction a they operate in. The system also should reflect the corporate culture and can benefit from considering industry best practices. From a global perspective, the International Organization of Standards has developed a practical set of tools to assist organizations in developing an OHSMS in the form of ISO 45001.
